What is Retro Bowl?
Retro Bowl is a retro-style American football management and arcade game developed by New Star Games Ltd. Released on mobile in 2020, Retro Bowl quickly became one of the most popular browser and mobile football games, played on iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch and the web. Inspired by classic 8-bit football titles from the 1980s and 1990s, Retro Bowl blends simple pick-up-and-play controls with surprisingly deep team management mechanics that keep players hooked for hours.
At its core, Retro Bowl puts you in the dual role of head coach and quarterback. On game day you take direct control of the offense — reading the defense, deciding when to pass or run, threading the ball to open receivers, and marching your team down the field for touchdowns. Off the field you manage your roster, negotiate contracts, handle player morale crises, upgrade your coaching staff, and stretch a tight salary cap as far as it will go. The result is a game that is easy to learn in the first five minutes yet hard to master even after dozens of seasons.
The browser version available here at retrobowl.me lets you play Retro Bowl free online — no download, no app store, no sign-up. Retro Bowl 26 — NFL Edition
In September 2025, New Star Games released NFL Retro Bowl '26 — the second officially licensed NFL edition, after NFL Retro Bowl '25. The new edition features over 2,000 real NFL players, all 32 official NFL team names and logos, authentic stadiums, and updated 2026 rosters. The retro pixel-art style is preserved, giving Retro Bowl 26 the same nostalgic charm that made the original a phenomenon.
The key addition in Retro Bowl 26 was the NFL Retro Bowl Championship Leaderboard, where fans play weekly matchups that follow the real NFL season. A year later, on September 3, 2026, it was followed by NFL Retro Bowl '27 (Retro Bowl 27), which adds Gauntlet Mode and over 3,200 real players.
The free browser version available here is the classic Retro Bowl. The NFL-licensed editions are Apple Arcade exclusives for iPhone and iPad: get the current one on the Apple App Store. The classic Retro Bowl app is also on Google Play.
Retro Bowl Online, Poki, GitHub, Google Sites & App
Retro Bowl online is the HTML5 browser version of the game. Officially, New Star Games publishes the web build on Poki and Kongregate, which is why many players search for Retro Bowl Poki. The player at the top of this page runs the same browser game full-width, with no account needed, and your franchise saves in the browser.
Searches for Retro Bowl GitHub and Retro Bowl Google Sites usually lead to fan-made copies of that web build, hosted on github.io pages or on a Google Sites page that embeds the game. They work until the repository is taken down or the page gets blocked, and the save is tied to that one address, so moving between copies can make your franchise look “reset”. If one server here does not load on your network, switch to another server under the player instead of hunting for a new mirror.
Looking for a Retro Bowl download or the Retro Bowl app? The official apps are free on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android), and a paid version is sold on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Skip third-party APK and “PC download” sites: on a computer or Chromebook the browser version needs no download at all. Every official version, Retro Bowl+ and the question of a Retro Bowl 2 are covered in our Retro Bowl download guide; what the “Unlimited Version” really unlocks (and why cheat codes do not exist) is in Retro Bowl cheats & coaching credits.
Key Features of Retro Bowl

- Deep Team Management: Draft free agents, trade players, manage morale, and build a championship dynasty over multiple seasons.
- $150 Million Salary Cap: Every signing decision matters: you get up to 10 key players under a $150m cap (or 12 with the $200m option), and the rest of the squad is hidden.
- Coordinators & Facilities: Spend coaching credits on offensive and defensive coordinators (they set your base team ratings) and on stadium, training and rehab upgrades.
- Five Difficulty Settings: Dynamic (adjusts as you win or lose), Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme, where every opponent plays with a 5-star rating.
- Career & Exhibition: Build a dynasty season after season in a career, or play a one-off Exhibition Game, including pass n' play against a friend.

How to Play Retro Bowl
Learning how to play Retro Bowl takes only a few minutes. Here is a step-by-step breakdown:
- 1Snap the Ball: Press Space (keyboard) or tap/click the screen to snap the ball and start each play.
- 2Read the Defense: Watch how defenders line up before deciding to pass or run. Look for receivers running open in the secondary.
- 3Pass or Run: To pass: click and drag toward a receiver, then release to throw. To run: tap/click behind the line of scrimmage for a handoff to your running back.
- 4Lead Your Receivers: Throw slightly ahead of where a receiver is running — not directly at them. Leading the throw reduces interceptions significantly.
- 5Gain Yards & Score: Chain together successful plays to drive down the field. Reach the end zone for a 6-point touchdown, then kick the extra point for 7.
- 6Manage the Clock: Retro Bowl uses a simplified clock. Score efficiently or run time off the clock if you are protecting a late lead.
- 7Between Games: Team Management: Use your off-season to sign free agents, extend contracts, upgrade coaches, and resolve player morale issues that appear as news headlines.
Retro Bowl Controls
Passing, Running & Scoring
Mastering the passing game is the single most important skill in Retro Bowl. Here is how every scoring method works:
| Scoring Play | Points | How to Execute |
|---|---|---|
| Touchdown | 6 | Carry or catch the ball in the opponent's end zone |
| Extra Point (PAT) | +1 | Kick through the uprights after a touchdown |
| Two-Point Conversion | +2 | Run or pass into the end zone instead of kicking |
| Field Goal | 3 | Kick through the uprights on 4th down or late in half |
| Safety | 2 | Tackle the opposing ball-carrier in their own end zone (rare) |
Clock control tip: If you are leading in the 4th quarter, prefer running plays to drain the clock. Short passes to the running back or slot receiver are safer than forcing deep throws into tight coverage — even a 3-yard gain keeps the chains moving and time ticking.
Salary Cap & Team Building Guide
The $150 million salary cap is the strategic heart of Retro Bowl. Every player you sign eats into that budget, and the game will not let you sign a player who takes you over the cap until you cut or trade someone. Here is how to manage it like a pro:
- Prioritize QB above everything: A QB rated 85+ can carry an average team to the championship. Spend 20–25% of your cap here first.
- Build around 2–3 elite receivers: WR1 and WR2 are your most valuable offensive weapons. Two high-rated receivers are worth more than five average ones.
- Raise the cap with credits: In a meeting you can spend coaching credits to persuade the league commissioner to raise the salary cap permanently.
- Plan for expiring contracts: When a contract runs out the player becomes a free agent. Extend the players you want to keep; a player with low morale may refuse to sign.
- Turn veterans into draft picks: Other teams sometimes offer a draft pick for one of your players. Trades are only possible up to week 8, and injured or toxic players cannot be traded.
- Keep credits for meetings: Boosting morale, delaying a retirement and raising the cap all cost coaching credits, so keep some in reserve.
The sweet spot for a championship roster is 1 elite QB, 2 strong WRs, 1 reliable RB, and an upgraded defensive coordinator. Everything else can be filled with cheaper mid-tier players without costing you wins.
Retro Bowl Cheats & Pro Tips
There are no official cheat codes in Retro Bowl, but experienced players have discovered a set of advanced techniques that function like cheats — legal strategies that give you a massive edge over the CPU:
- Dive to Protect the Ball: Diving to the ground or running out of bounds protects against fumbles (in-game tip), which matters most with a tired runner.
- Running Back as Safety Valve: When all deep receivers are covered, immediately check down to your RB near the line of scrimmage. A 4-yard gain on 3rd and 5 is better than a sack or interception.
- Grow Your Own Players: Players gain XP and level up; a better training facility helps them gain XP faster, and training regimes affect happiness, XP, energy and injury risk.
- Upgrade the Stadium: Upgrading your stadium gives the fans an immediate boost and makes them more positive after a win and less negative after a loss.
- Manage the Clock: Running out of bounds stops the clock, and you get 2 or 3 time outs per half (depending on quarter length) to stop it after a tackle.
- Good Coordinators First: Your coordinators set the base offense and defense rating before star players are taken into account, so a strong coordinator improves every snap.
- Throw It Away: Don't be afraid to throw the ball out of bounds to avoid a sack (in-game tip); if your QB keeps getting rushed you need stronger offensive linemen.
