Are there cheat codes in Retro Bowl?
Retro Bowl has no cheat codes, code-entry screens, or hidden cheat menus in any official version. The game is built purely around authentic football strategy.
"Unlimited credits" hacks, hacked builds, and "mod APK" files are unofficial modifications not created by New Star Games. retrobowl.me does not host or link to them. Downloading unofficial builds carries severe risks: corrupted or lost save files, malware infections, and broken gameplay.
Retro Bowl by New Star Games rewards on-field skill and smart team management. Stick to the official apps or the free browser game on the retrobowl.me home page and your career save stays safe.
What "Retro Bowl unlimited" really is
When players search for "Retro Bowl unlimited", they are almost always referring to the official "Unlimited Version" in the mobile app. This is not a hack, but an official feature upgrade from the developer.
Per the game's text, purchasing the Unlimited Version "Unlocks Team Editor, Weather and Kick Returns, Coaching Credits x 25". It is an optional in-app purchase on iOS and Android. Retro Bowl+ on Apple Arcade (launched June 23, 2023) included the unlimited version at no extra cost. Check our Retro Bowl download guide for official platform options.
The Team Editor is the official way to edit teams, and it comes with the Unlimited Version (or Retro Bowl+ on Apple Arcade). There is no need for a modded build to change your teams.
The mobile app also sells Coaching Credit packs. Importantly, purchased credits carry over when starting a new career: "You have $num of your purchased Coaching Credits remaining that will be transferred to your new save file." In contrast, earned credits do not carry over: "Your save data and any existing Coaching Credits will be lost."
How Coaching Credits work
Tip 17 in the game explains: "Coaching Credit isn't cash, it's kudos - it represents how much respect you have from the owner, team and fans". Your balance is visible on the post-match screen, roster, front office, draft, and free-agent screens.
Coaching Credits are spent across several vital organizational areas:
- Signing free agents: Persuading free agents to join your team requires coaching credits and salary cap space.
- Hiring coordinators: You spend credits to hire offensive and defensive coordinators and extend staff contracts by 1 year.
- Upgrading facilities: Credits fund renovations to your Stadium, Training, and Rehab facilities.
- Refreshing candidate lists: Spending credits refreshes the free-agent list or staff hire list.
Legit ways to get more Coaching Credits
Because the game has no cheat codes, you must rely on official game mechanics to build credit reserves.
Sell unused draft picks: During the draft, you can convert surplus picks into credits when prompted: "Do you want to sell your picks in this round for $value coach credits?"
Mobile rating offer: The mobile app may prompt: "Would you like to rate and review Retro Bowl on the store for $num coach credits?" Submitting a review grants credits.
Purchasing credit packs: On mobile, you can buy credit packs. Unused purchased credits transfer to new career files, whereas earned credits reset.
Spend credits with discipline: Avoid spending credits repeatedly to refresh free-agent or staff hiring pools. Refreshing costs credits each time and drains kudos needed for permanent upgrades.
Spend credits in the right order
Spending credits in the right sequence accelerates franchise development. Facilities upgrades deliver lasting value throughout each season:
Stadium: Upgrades make fans more positive after a win and less negative after a loss, and give fans an immediate boost.
Training: Upgrades help players gain XP faster and provide an immediate morale boost to the squad.
Rehab: Upgrades help player condition and injury recovery, improve energy recovery between games, give tired players an immediate boost, and reduce injuries.
Coordinators determine the base rating for defense and offense before star players are factored in. When hiring staff, evaluate coach traits: instant level up, potential increase, or a morale boost for a position; toxic players having no negative impact; fan happiness +1% per game; condition +5% per game; XP +5% per game; tiredness causing no morale effect; or scouting 3 extra players in the draft. Investing in condition and XP traits protects your roster over long seasons.
Tips that work better than cheats: on the field
On-field execution matters more than looking for cheat codes. Built-in game tips provide essential gameplay guidance:
- Protect against fumbles: Tired players fumble more. Diving or running out of bounds protects against fumbles.
- Manage the clock: Running out of bounds stops the game clock.
- Avoid sacks: Throw the ball out of bounds when coverage is tight to avoid a sack.
- Strengthen the line: If your quarterback is rushed constantly, you need stronger offensive linemen.
- Account for fatigue: A quarterback's throwing range and a kicker's range deplete with stamina during a game.
- Rely on skilled catchers: Only good catchers can jump or dive catch.
- Exploit player attributes: Fast players hurdle tackles, strong players stiff-arm more, and experienced players avoid tackles more.
Tips for the front office: draft, roster, morale and difficulty
Successful front-office management builds sustainable championship rosters. The draft has 3 rounds with 1 pick per round. Scout players to reveal their potential. You can trade players away to gain extra picks, and other teams occasionally offer draft picks for your players. All trading ends after week 8. After year 2, you can receive job offers from other franchises.
Roster and salary cap: Carry up to 10 star players under the standard $150m salary cap, or 12 star players under a $200m cap.
Training regime: A HARD regime provides more XP but uses more energy, lowers happiness, and increases injury risks. A LIGHT regime conserves energy, boosts morale, and reduces injuries, but yields slower XP.
Morale and attribute buffs: Exceptional morale gives a +1 skill buff. Angry or toxic morale grants +1 strength, and toxic players receive +1 stamina. Players at 100% condition get +1 speed.
Locker room management: Cut toxic players to improve overall team morale. Resting tired players boosts their morale. Older players lose more energy, and all players tire as the season progresses.
Difficulty: Retro Bowl features 5 difficulty settings including Dynamic. DYNAMIC adjusts automatically, getting harder when you win and easier when you lose. EXTREME forces all opponents to play with a 5-star rating. You can also explore collegiate strategy in our Retro Bowl College guide or try other titles in our football games collection.
