What is NFL Retro Bowl '27?
NFL Retro Bowl '27 is a retro pixel-art American football game by New Star Games, the studio behind Retro Bowl, Retro Bowl College and New Star Soccer. It keeps the Retro Bowl formula (you play the offense on the field and run the team off it) but uses the real NFL teams and real NFL and NFLPA players. New Star Games calls it its third season working with the NFL and NFLPA, after the '25 and '26 editions.

Gauntlet Mode explained
Gauntlet Mode is the big addition in '27. You begin with limited resources and have to survive a 16-game win streak. Before games you choose between safe matchups and top-rated opponents, and your rewards are either real players or powerful perks. A loss ends the run, but Player XP and abilities carry over, so each attempt makes the next one easier. A run builds to a winner-takes-all game against a division nemesis, and scores go on a weekly leaderboard.
The July 2026 announcement described a 15-game streak; the launch release, the official game page and the App Store listing all say 16 games, so 16 is the number in the released game.
What's new compared with '25 and '26
| Edition | Released | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| NFL Retro Bowl '25 | Sept 5, 2024 | First edition with the official NFL and NFLPA license, an Apple Arcade exclusive that relaunched Retro Bowl+ with real teams and players. |
| NFL Retro Bowl '26 | Sept 4, 2025 | Apple Arcade exclusive; added the Championship Leaderboard, where fans play weekly matchups that follow the real NFL season. |
| NFL Retro Bowl '27 | Sept 3, 2026 | Gauntlet Mode, over 3,200 players, new roster options including the 12-man roster, Championship Leaderboard with a new campaign, Exhibition Mode and seasonal Game Center Challenges. |
On the App Store, '27 replaced '26 in the same Apple Arcade listing, so players who had '26 installed get '27 as an update. Since launch New Star Games has shipped an update on September 30, 2026 and another in October with more players and a couple of minor fixes.
