What is NFL Grid?

NFL Grid is a sports trivia puzzle that challenges your knowledge of professional football rosters and franchise histories. The board shows three franchises across the top and three down the side, and the objective is to fill all nine cells with players who appeared on the rosters of both teams that meet at that cell. Instead of running on-field football plays, you rely on memory and roster recall to solve the board. The player list covers NFL rosters from 1920 to the present, and the game runs directly in your web browser with no installation needed.

Key features

  • Grid matrix format: Nine intersecting squares, each pairing two of the 32 current NFL franchises.
  • Nine guess maximum: You get nine guesses for nine squares, so every wrong answer leaves you one guess short of a perfect board.
  • Huge player list: More than 30,000 players from 1920 onward can be searched by name, with their position and active years shown.
  • Daily grid: A fresh set of franchise pairings appears each day, changing at midnight UTC.
  • New grid button: Start a random new board at any time if you want to keep playing after the daily puzzle.
  • Browser access: Loads on desktop and mobile browsers without registration or downloads.

How to play

  1. Review the row and column headers showing the franchise names and abbreviations.
  2. Click or tap on any empty square to open the search box.
  3. Type at least two letters of a player who played for both franchises in that row and column.
  4. Pick the player from the list to submit your guess.
  5. A correct answer fills the square; a wrong answer costs a guess and leaves the square open for another try.
  6. Keep going until all nine squares are filled or your guesses run out, then press New grid for another board.

Scoring and player eligibility

Success in NFL Grid means filling the whole board within your nine guesses. The counter at the top shows how many guesses you have left and how many of the nine squares are correct, and finishing all nine earns the "Immaculate" message. Because every miss uses up a guess, it pays to be sure before you submit.

A player counts for a square when he appeared on the roster of both franchises at some point in his career. The order does not matter, and the stints can be years apart. Each search result shows the player's position and first and last active seasons, which helps you tell apart players who share a name.

Tips and strategy

  • Think of veteran journeymen: Players who moved across multiple teams during long careers fit many franchise pairs.
  • Solve obvious intersections first: Securing straightforward squares early builds momentum and preserves your limited guesses.
  • Track division trades: Players who signed with divisional opponents often satisfy challenging multi-team intersections.
  • Check the years: Use the active seasons shown next to each name to pick the right player when two share a name.
  • Remember relocated franchises: Teams that changed cities keep their history, so older players can still count for them.

How many total guesses do you get in NFL Grid?

Each board gives you nine guesses for the nine cells. A wrong entry uses up a guess, but the cell stays open so you can try a different player.

How do I know if a player fits a square?

The player must have appeared on the rosters of both franchises shown for that row and column. The stints can be at any point in his career.

Does the grid change every day?

Yes. A new daily grid appears at midnight UTC, and the New grid button lets you start a random board at any time.

Which players are included?

The search covers more than 30,000 NFL players from 1920 to the present, each listed with position and active years.
