What is Subway Surfers?

Subway Surfers is an endless runner from Kiloo and SYBO where you dash down the train tracks, dodge oncoming trains and grab coins while the Inspector and his dog chase you, and you can play it free right here in your browser. The version on this page is Subway Surfers: San Francisco (version 1.94.0), so the World Tour stop is San Francisco, with Jenny as the city character and the Groovy board as the city board.

Every run starts the same way: you tag a train, the Inspector spots you, and you run. There is no finish line. The goal is to go as far as you can, collect as many coins as you can and push your score higher each time. Playing Subway Surfers online here means no app store and no install. If you want Subway Surfers unblocked on a school Chromebook, it runs right in a browser tab, so just press Space and go.

Key features

  • Three-lane running: Switch between the left, middle and right tracks to get around trains, barriers, light signals and bushes.
  • Power-ups on the track: Pick up the Spray Can Jetpack, Super Sneakers, Coin Magnet and 2X Multiplier during a run, then upgrade them to last longer.
  • Hoverboards: Press Space to ride a hoverboard that protects you from crashing for 30 seconds.
  • Big cast: The game lists 69 surfers, from Jake, Tricky and Fresh to city characters like Jenny from San Francisco, plus 84 named boards.
  • Missions and a growing multiplier: Finish three missions to complete a Mission Set and raise your score multiplier, all the way to x30.
  • Daily Word Hunt: Collect the daily letters on the tracks for streak rewards that end in a Super Mystery Box.
  • Awards and keys: Earn Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond awards to collect keys, which you can spend on a "Save me!" to keep running after a crash.

How to play Subway Surfers

  1. Wait for the title screen and press Space to play.
  2. Follow the short tutorial. It asks you to press each arrow key once: up to jump, down to roll, and left or right to change lanes.
  3. Run as far as you can. Change lanes to avoid trains, jump over low barriers and roll under the high ones.
  4. Grab coins, keys, power-ups and Mystery Boxes along the way.
  5. Press Space when things look bad to ride a hoverboard and survive a crash.
  6. When you crash for real, tap "Save me!" and pay with keys (or watch a video when one is offered) to keep going, or let the run end and keep your coins.
  7. Spend coins in the Store on upgrades, boards, Headstarts and Score Boosters, then run again.

Subway Surfers power-ups and boosts

Power-ups show up on the tracks during a run. Boosts are items you buy or win and use at the start of a run. Here is what the game itself says each one does:

Missions, awards and your score multiplier

Your score multiplier is the biggest key to a high score. You raise it by finishing Mission Sets. Each set has three missions, and the game says the multiplier can climb all the way to x30. Here are real mission and award goals from the game:

GoalExample from the game
Movement missionsJump over trains, roll under barriers, roll a set number of times in the left, middle or right lane
Coin missionsPick up coins in one lane, with a Magnet, with the Jetpack or with a Power Jumper
Power-up missionsPick up Super Sneakers, Magnets or Jetpacks, or have several power-ups active at the same time
Score missionsScore a set number of points in one run, or score without using any power-ups
High Jumper awardWear Super Sneakers for several minutes in a row
Straight Ahead awardScore a set number of points without changing lanes
No Acrobatics awardScore a set number of points without jumping or rolling
Coin Cautious awardScore a set number of points in one run without collecting coins

Awards come in Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond levels, and finishing them is one of the main ways to earn keys.

Tips and strategy

Many of these come straight from the Player Tips that appear on the loading screen.

  • Cancel jumps: Press the down arrow in mid-air to roll and drop back to the ground fast.
  • Get on the roofs: You can hop on barriers to get onto trains. Try to stay on the roof of every train as long as possible, since the roofs are safer than the tracks.
  • Use your hoverboard early: Press Space as soon as you see obstacles and don't know what to do. If you crash on a board, an explosion clears the stage.
  • Stack jump boosts: Super Jump with a hoverboard and Super Sneakers to get over whole trains.
  • Pick the right board: The Bouncer board picks up coins from below and works like Super Sneakers plus a hoverboard. A fully upgraded Freestyler gets both Double Jump and Super Jump. The upgraded Monster board can jump over trains and is very fast.
  • Use Power Jumpers: They get you up onto the tunnels, where coins are waiting.
  • Do the Word Hunt every day: The Daily Challenge rewards Super Mystery Boxes, and the Letter Chaser award counts how many days in a row you finish it.
  • Chase missions, not just distance: A higher multiplier helps every run you play from then on.

Daily and weekly events

Word Hunt (Daily Challenge)

Collect the letters of the daily word on the tracks. Rewards grow by day, from Day 1 up to Day 5+, where the prize is a Super Mystery Box.

Weekly Hunt

Collect a set number of Hunt Tokens during the week. Prizes include Hoverboards, Headstarts, Score Boosters, keys and the Super Mystery Box.

Wordy Weekend

Weekend word challenges around music, movies and dance unlock limited characters, and the Weekend Fun award tracks how many you finish. Finishing the Weekly Hunt in one run counts toward the Big Game Hunter award.

Developer and history

This page's game data lists Kiloo Games as the company behind Subway Surfers, and the game code is full of SYBO tools and SYBO analytics, so it is the work of Kiloo and SYBO. The store links inside point to the official mobile app pages, and the game's own settings link to Poki's privacy statement, which shows this is the Poki web version. The San Francisco stop is one of many cities in the World Tour, and the game's character list includes surfers from Amsterdam, Cairo, Hawaii, Mumbai, Seoul, Venice and dozens more.
